We have been recording performance data since 1986 and in that time we have aimed to get the balance right between the traits that EBVs do and don’t measure. We take great care to successfully advise clients on the selection process of a well-suited bull that aligns with the values and objectives of their own beef operation.
EBVs have been a great tool for beef production, for example, at SGA we aim for the 'moderate frame in mature cow EBV' as we have found this works well within our herd and key objective which is producing Bulls That Work. Not to mention it takes more feed to produce a cow with a 'higher mature cow EBV' than a lower one.
The Angus breed has progressed significantly, and for many years it was difficult to breed numbers of cattle that excelled for every trait, but the gap is now narrowing considerably. Selecting a bull based on performance data is one thing but for optimal performance, many external factors such as environment, management and target market also come into the decision making process.
